What 𗝩 means
“Hard punishment”: a severe penalty. Tangut dictionaries give this English gloss for 𗝩, a character in the Tangut writing system.
Developed for the Tangut-led Western Xia kingdom around 1036, the script served government and schools. Buddhist works were translated into Tangut and printed from carved blocks.
Writing continued after Western Xia ended; Buddhist inscriptions dated 1502 are its latest known examples. Tangut character forms reflect Chinese-character structure, but 𗝩 is Tangut.
