Tangut Character 177A5

1958/6136

𗞥 is a character in the Tangut script, the writing system for the Tangut language; “Tangut ideograph-177A5” is an identifier, not a word translation. Created in 1036 under Western Xia (Xixia) rule, the script served government, Buddhist scripture, and Tangut cultural writing. Its character-building drew on Chinese models, but Tangut is a separate script.

What 𗞥 means

It is a Tangut character; its label is not a translation. “Tangut ideograph-177A5” identifies the encoded character. It does not tell you how the historical word was pronounced or what it meant.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It served Western Xia government, religion, and culture. The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao during Western Xia state-building. It supported official writing and a distinct Tangut identity alongside China’s Song dynasty. A Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon—the collection of Buddhist scriptures—is thought to have been a major aim.

Tangut texts include Buddhist scripture, official records, secular works, and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. Manuscripts and woodblock-printed books from Khara-khoto, an abandoned Tangut city, show the script in use in the 12th or early 13th century.

After the Western Xia period, everyday use faded. The bilingual glossary Pearl in the Palm helped scholars decipher Tangut. The script drew on Chinese character-building and followed an earlier model, the Khitan script; these are connections between writing systems, and Tangut remains distinct from Chinese.

Why is 𗞥 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
