Tangut Character 177A8

1961/6136

𗞨 is a Tangut character glossed in a dictionary as “bamboo shoots.” It belonged to a writing system used for Western Xia administration, Buddhist texts, law, and printing. On its own, the character does not tell you whether a sender means the food, the glyph, or Tangut writing.

Text symbol

What 𗞨 means

It is glossed as “bamboo shoots.”

Li Fanwen’s English index to his 2008 Tangut dictionary lists this gloss for entry 4195. The Unicode label is an inventory name, not a translation of the word.

Why was 𗞨 used?

It belonged to a script for Tangut state and religious life.

The Tangut script was devised around 1037; surviving manuscripts begin in the mid-11th century. It drew on Chinese and Khitan writing traditions but was designed to write Tangut, the language of Western Xia.

Tangut appears in state records, Buddhist translations, legal texts, and printed books. After Western Xia fell, the script continued in later religious and historical material; the last known inscription is dated 1502.

What does 𗞨 mean when sent alone?

On its own, it gives no reliable chat reading.

Without shared context, the glyph leaves it unclear whether the sender means the dictionary gloss, the character itself, or Tangut writing. If that distinction matters, add a few words explaining the gloss or why you are using the character.

Historical and scholarly; in ordinary chat it reads as an unexplained Tangut character.

Alone, it does not show whether you mean bamboo shoots or Tangut writing.

The active font may lack a Tangut glyph for it. A font with Tangut coverage can display the character without changing which character it is.

If it appears as a box, use a font with Tangut coverage. The font changes the drawing, not the encoded character.
Why is 𗞨 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
