What 𗟏 means
𗟏 is a Tangut character glossed as 砒 (“arsenic”). Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary lists it as entry 4223; 砒 is a historical Chinese word for arsenic.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor. It served official, private, and religious writing, including Buddhist texts, and helped distinguish the Tangut state culturally and politically from Song China. It continued into later imperial periods and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
The square construction explains why Tangut can look Chinese, but it is a separate script. Here, 砒 is the Chinese gloss for 𗟏, not a part of the character’s shape.
What does it mean when someone sends 𗟏?
Treat a standalone message as a Tangut sample or specialist reference. A reader who cannot read Tangut may not know that it means arsenic. For poison, medicine, or safety, state the meaning in words.
Chinese readers may recognize the square style without being able to read this Tangut character.
Historical and specialist; readers who do not know Tangut may not recognize the gloss.
For a poison warning, write the meaning in words.

Questions people ask
2Is 𗟏 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script with square-shaped forms. Chinese 砒 is its dictionary gloss, not the identity of 𗟏.
Why does 𗟏 appear as a box?
The font in use lacks Tangut coverage. Choose a Tangut-capable font; the box is a display problem, not a different character.
