tangut ideograph-177d2

Tangut character 𗟒

2003/6136

𗟒 is a Tangut character; the Unicode label identifies it, not the word it represents. Tangut is a separate script modeled on Chinese character forms, created for Western Xia in 1036; neighboring Khitan scripts were a precedent. Tangut texts include Buddhist works and secular translations. Khara-Khoto manuscripts from the 12th or early 13th century preserve it; it stayed in use after Western Xia fell. A Tangut-capable font displays it.

Why does 𗟒 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
