tangut ideograph-177d3

Tangut character 177D3

2004/6136

𗟓 is a Tangut character whose dictionary meanings are “speech” and “word.” It appears in historical Tangut dictionaries; Tangut writing also survives in Buddhist works, records, and translations. A box in place of the glyph means the font cannot draw it, not that its meaning has changed.

What 𗟓 means

It means “speech” or “word” in Tangut.

Li Fanwen’s Tangut-to-Chinese dictionary gives “speech” as its gloss. Another Tangut dictionary, Sea of Writing, lists the character at entry 31.132; Li’s English index also groups it under “word.”

Tangut writing was shaped by Chinese writing

The Tangut script was created in 1036 for the Western Xia state to write the Tangut language.

It adapted methods and components from Chinese writing for the Tangut language. Tangut education used it for records and translations of Chinese classics; surviving texts also include Buddhist and administrative works. The connection is between writing traditions, not a one-to-one match with a modern Chinese character.

Why does 𗟓 show as a box?

The font usually lacks a Tangut drawing for it.

The character can be present in text even when the active font has no Tangut outlines. A Tangut-capable font can draw it; the box signals a display gap, not a change to the character or its meaning.

Historical and specialist; label its Tangut context when readers need to recognize it as a word.

Without Tangut context, readers may see an unfamiliar historical glyph instead of “speech” or “word.”

1

Why does 𗟓 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
