What 𗟣 means

Its reading, ldi̯ə², is a reconstructed sound, not an English translation. 𗟣 is a Tangut character from the writing system used for the Tangut language.

When was Tangut script created?

It gave the Western Xia state a script for records and literature.

Around 1036, the first Western Xia emperor ordered the creation of a distinctive script and its teaching. The system represented Tangut, the kingdom’s language, and supported administration and books.

The earliest transmitted example cited for Tangut writing is an official document sent to a military inspector in Guazhou, dated 1072. This exact glyph appears at entry 52A26 of Homophones B, a Tangut text that groups characters by sound; its editions were printed during the Western Xia period. Tangut writing carried Buddhist translations and printed scriptures. A 1502 inscription shows it was still used after Western Xia fell.

Why does 𗟣 appear as a box?

A box usually means the font cannot draw Tangut.

The text may be intact even when the current font lacks Tangut coverage, leaving a blank or box. Tangut uses a Chinese-influenced square style, but it is a separate writing system for the Tangut language.

Historical and specialist; used in Tangut studies, archival transcription, and discussion of the script.

Its square, Chinese-influenced design does not give it a Chinese reading.

1

Why does 𗟣 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
