Tangut Character for Shame

2099/6136

𗠲 is a Tangut character glossed as “shame”; its Unicode name is a number, not a translation. Tangut (Xixia) writing was created around 1036 for the Tangut language. It appears in official, private, and Buddhist texts, survived Western Xia’s fall, and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

What 𗠲 means

A Tangut–Chinese dictionary glosses it as “shame.”

Its Chinese gloss is 耻. Tangut was designed with Chinese and Khitan models but remains a distinct script, not Chinese writing. Unicode’s numeric name identifies the code point; it does not give the Tangut word’s pronunciation.

Why does 𗠲 show as a box?

The active font needs Tangut glyphs.

A missing-glyph box means the active font lacks this character. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut includes Tangut glyphs; a font with that coverage can display 𗠲.

Historical writing, not a social cue.

Its Chinese-like shape does not make it Chinese.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗠲 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗠲 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
