Why was the Tangut script created?
To write Tangut and serve the Western Xia state.
The script was created around 1036 under Western Xia rule to write Tangut, once spoken in what is now northwestern China. It served official and cultural life and persisted after the Mongol conquest; later surviving texts are chiefly Buddhist. Tangut writing resembles Chinese ideographs, but the scripts are unrelated. Fonts may draw the same encoded character differently.
Specialist and historical; the dictionary gloss needs Tangut context.
