Tangut character 1786C

2157/6136

𗡬 is a Tangut character, but as of 2026-10-09 no safe standalone English gloss is established; read it in its passage, not as a self-contained message. Tangut writing served Western Xia government, Buddhist texts, and wider literature, and this glyph needs a Tangut-capable font.

What 𗡬 means

Its standalone English gloss is unresolved.

Read it in the Tangut passage it came from. In 1036, Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Western Xia state (Xixia), ordered the Tangut script to strengthen the state and produce the Buddhist canon, the collection of Buddhist scriptures. A Tangut manuscript fragment found at Khara-Khoto, a ruined settlement, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

The surviving corpus includes Buddhist scriptures, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Confucian works, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature. Tangut writing was modeled on Chinese writing but was not derived from it; its creators also followed the earlier example of neighboring Khitan states. After the Mongol conquest, Tangut disappeared from daily use in the 13th century.

Why does 𗡬 show as a box?

The font lacks Tangut coverage.

A font draws this glyph; if it lacks Tangut coverage, it can show as a square or blank. Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan are examples of fonts with Tangut coverage. Two capable fonts can draw the same character differently without changing its identity.

A specialist historical character, not an ordinary conversational reaction.

Don't use it as a reaction unless the recipient can read the surrounding Tangut text.

Why does 𗡬 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗡬 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
