What 𗡯 means
Its catalog label identifies the script; it is not an English translation. A Tangut dictionary index files 𗡯 under 𘡱, a radical used as a filing key. That helps locate the character, but does not tell you its English meaning or pronunciation.
The Tangut script was created around 1036–1037 for Western Xia state records and translated works. The earliest surviving official document is dated 1072. After the state fell in 1227, Buddhist and other texts continued using Tangut; an inscription from 1502 shows that use lasted beyond the dynasty. Those dates describe the script’s history, not a documented change in 𗡯’s meaning.
Is 𗡯 Chinese?
No. It is Tangut, a separate script shaped partly by Chinese writing. The scripts are distinct, so the square, dense forms do not give 𗡯 a Chinese reading. Historical scholarship also compares Tangut with Khitan and Jurchen script traditions, but comparison alone does not establish that this character was borrowed from either.
A specialist historical-script character, suited to Tangut study or text encoding rather than general-purpose reactions.
A box or question mark can mean the font lacks Tangut coverage, not that the character changed.
Drift: As of 2026, Tangut preservation work includes digital typeface research and specialist input methods.

Questions people ask
1Why is 𗡯 showing as a box?
A font may not include Tangut characters, so the software shows a missing-glyph box or question mark. The character is still 𗡯; use a font with Tangut coverage to display it.
