What 𗢔 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “fear.”
Li Fanwen's Tangut–Chinese dictionary index maps 𗢔 to the Chinese character 怖 (“fear”) and records the reconstructed Tangut reading rjir². That form is scholarly notation for Tangut, not a Mandarin pronunciation.
A surviving manuscript from the ruined city of Khara-Khoto is dated to the 12th or early 13th century, a concrete glimpse of Tangut writing in use.
Why does 𗢔 look like Chinese?
It is a separate script with a Chinese-like component structure.
The script was created under Western Xia's first emperor around 1036 for the Tangut language. It served state-building, Buddhist scripture, and a distinct Western Xia identity. A surviving manuscript from the ruined city of Khara-Khoto is dated to the 12th or early 13th century.
After Western Xia fell, Tangut texts continued under Yuan and Ming rule; the script had fallen out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty. Khitan scripts are a regional parallel: scholars have proposed direct influence on Tangut, but a close connection has not been demonstrated.
What does it mean when someone sends 𗢔?
A lone character cannot tell you why it was sent.
“Fear” is a dictionary clue, not a reliable reading of the sender's tone. If it appears by itself, ask what Tangut text, source, or discussion it belongs to.
Historical and scholarly; its home is Tangut text, not conversational punctuation.
The Chinese gloss 怖 does not make 𗢔 Chinese or give it a Mandarin reading.
