Tangut character

2202/6136

𗢙 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode name is an inventory label, not a word translation. Tangut, also called Xixia, was the writing system for a historical language of northwestern China. Its shape may recall Chinese writing, but the scripts are unrelated.

What 𗢙 means

Its Unicode name is an inventory label, not a word translation.

Tangut character names are generated from catalog numbers. To identify the word 𗢙 represents in a passage, consult a Tangut dictionary and read the surrounding sentence.

Why does 𗢙 look Chinese?

Tangut is a separate script, despite the visual resemblance.

The script was created under the first emperor of Western Xia about 1036 to write the Tangut language, spoken in what is now northwestern China. Tangut texts include official and private writing, religious books and sutras (Buddhist scriptures), inscriptions, and manuscripts.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, people continued to use the script during the Yuan and Ming dynasties; it was obsolete by the end of Ming. Scholars rediscovered Tangut in the late 19th century and largely deciphered it through early 20th century work by N. A. Nevskij. Today it is studied as its own field.

How can I type or display 𗢙?

A Tangut input method handles entry; a Tangut font handles display.

The Tangut Rime input method accepts reconstructed phonetic input and also offers stroke and four-corner entry.

If a font lacks Tangut coverage, 𗢙 can appear as a box or empty square. That placeholder is a display problem; the underlying character is unchanged.

Historical and specialist; an unexplained message gives no reliable clue to the intended word.

A Chinese-like outline does not make this a Chinese character.

Worth knowing

  • An index to Gerard Clauson’s Skeleton Tangut dictionary lists 𗢙 as L3778; that code locates an entry, not its meaning.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𗢙 a Chinese character?

No. Tangut is a separate script; the resemblance to Chinese ideographs is visual.

Why does 𗢙 appear as a square?

If your font lacks Tangut coverage, it may show a missing-glyph square. That affects the display, not the underlying character.
