Tangut character 178A2

2211/6136

𗢢 is a character in the Tangut script, also called Xixia script; its Unicode label identifies the sign but does not give its word meaning, which depends on the Tangut text around it. If it appears as a box, the font usually lacks Tangut support.

What 𗢢 means

Its Unicode name identifies the character, not its translation. For this Tangut (Xixia) script character, a Tangut dictionary entry or the surrounding passage provides the word-level meaning; the number-based label is only an identifier.

How did Tangut writing develop?

Western Xia commissioned Tangut writing in 1036. The script served the state's administration and cultural identity, and its design drew on neighboring Khitan script traditions.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing remained in use. A manuscript fragment from Khara-Khoto, probably dated to the 12th or early 13th century, praises a Chinese emperor; the wider tradition also carried Buddhist works and secular translations.

Why does 𗢢 show as a box?

A box usually means your font lacks Tangut support. Unicode still identifies the same character, but the active font needs a Tangut outline to draw it.

1

Why does 𗢢 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
