Tangut character 𗢲

2227/6136

𗢲 is a Tangut character whose meaning depends on the word or name around it. Its reading is reconstructed as gja̱²; in a documented personal name, it can correspond to 𗃘. That one name does not make the two signs interchangeable everywhere.

What 𗢲 means

Its meaning depends on the Tangut word or name around it.

The Tangut reading for 𗢲 is reconstructed as gja̱²; the 1194 contract edition writes it gia. These are scholarly transcriptions of its reading, not English translations.

A 1194 land-sale contract uses it in a personal name. There, 𗢲 can occupy the same place and carry the same role as 𗃘, transcribed ·o in that edition. Treat them as equivalent in that name only; the surrounding Tangut text supplies the interpretation.

Where was Tangut used?

It served the Western Xia state and later Tangut records.

Historical accounts place the creation of the Tangut script in 1036–1037, associated with Western Xia (Xixia) ruler Li Yuanhao and his official Yeli Renrong. The earliest surviving example identified is an official document from 1072. The script served practical and political purposes: it recorded the Tangut state in its own language and marked a public identity while Sinitic writing remained in use.

Tangut writing also carried Buddhist translations, copied books, and woodblock printing. The Khara-Khoto Buddhist-book catalogue includes dated works from 1084 to 1222. Later inscriptions from 1345, 1348, and 1502 show its continued use after Western Xia's conquest. Its record spans government documents, religious writing, and monuments.

Why does 𗢲 look Chinese?

Tangut uses square graphs in a style familiar from Chinese writing.

It is a separate script for the Tangut language, not a variant of Chinese characters (Han characters). Its graph-building conventions share a broad tradition with Chinese writing, but resemblance does not identify 𗢲's reading.

Khitan is another historical writing system associated with a neighboring people. Some scholars propose that it influenced Tangut's origins; others find no close relationship. Visual similarity alone does not establish that the scripts are related.

Historical Tangut text, language study, and archival records are its natural context.

Do not assign an English meaning from the shape alone.
