tangut ideograph-178d8

Tangut Ideograph 178D8

2265/6136

𗣘 is a Tangut character, but its shape and chart label do not reveal its word. Tangut writing served Western Xia's government and Buddhist translations. An inscription dated 1502 shows the script continued after the state fell in 1227.

Text symbol

What 𗣘 means

A dictionary or the surrounding text can reveal its word.

Unicode's chart labels it L2008-2188 and files it under 𘢌, a Tangut dictionary radical; neither is a translation.

Tangut writing arose in the Western Xia state around 1036–1037; its earliest surviving document dates to 1072.

Is 𗣘 Chinese?

No; it belongs to the Tangut script.

The glyph may resemble Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script; knowing Chinese does not make Tangut text readable.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗣘 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
