Tangut character 𗣶

2295/6136

𗣶 is a character in the Tangut writing system, used to write the Tangut language. A Tangut rhyming dictionary from the mid-12th century records it; the number in its Unicode name is an identifier, not a translation. To display it, your font needs Tangut coverage.

What 𗣶 means

𗣶 is a character in the Tangut writing system.

The Tangut script was used to write the Tangut language. Its angular forms resemble Chinese characters, but Tangut is a separate writing system; a Chinese reading cannot be inferred from this glyph.

A Tangut rhyming dictionary—a reference book that groups entries by rhyme—called Wenhai (“Sea of Writing”) lists 𗣶 at entry 38.243. Unicode source data links it to L2008-3279 in Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Tangut a writing system for a state.

The Tangut script was created by imperial decree around 1036 to write Tangut for the Western Xia state.

Its components are not little pictures, so the shape alone does not reveal how to read a word. Tangut writing continued in Buddhist works and printed texts after the Western Xia state fell.

How do I type 𗣶?

In source code, use a Unicode escape for the character.

Python uses \U000178F6, JavaScript uses \u{178F6}, and HTML uses 𗣶. These are different ways to represent the same character in code.

For display, choose a font with Tangut coverage. Without one, the glyph may appear as a missing-glyph box or fallback mark; the text character itself has not changed.

A historical Tangut character for Tangut texts and reference contexts; its shape alone does not reveal its reading.

A Chinese-looking form does not make this a Chinese character.

Why does 𗣶 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
