What 𗣴 means

The listed gloss is “a surname.”

Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut dictionary supplies it.

Tangut was the language of Xixia (Western Xia). Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered its script in 1036 for state-building and Buddhist scripture. The neighboring Khitan had created two scripts about a century earlier; one drew on Chinese writing. Tangut borrowed Chinese visual and structural ideas but was not derived from it. Under Yuan and Ming rule, it served official, private, religious, and translated texts before falling out of use.

Why does 𗣴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
