Tangut Character 178F2

2291/6136

𗣲’s meaning is clearest in context: a Tangut verse places it in a line about the yearly cycle. The line gives no settled one-word English gloss. The character belongs to the Tangut script used for the language of Western Xia (Xixia), not the Chinese writing system.

What 𗣲 means

It appears in a surviving line about the yearly cycle.

A Tangut teaching poem called the Golden Guide preserves the five-character line 𘊡𗑝𘐡𗖵𗣲, translated as the seasons and divisions lining up in order. This places 𗣲 within a phrase, not a one-word gloss. Researchers offer three written reconstructions of its Tangut reading—mbô, bio, and bɔ—rather than one agreed pronunciation.

The Western Xia (Xixia) state commissioned Tangut writing around 1036 for its language and government. After it fell in 1227, the script continued in texts under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before falling out of use.

Why does 𗣲 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
