Tangut Ideograph 1790B

𗤋 is a Tangut word that makes a phrase negative, translated as “not,” “no,” or “do not” depending on the sentence. Its main home is historical Tangut writing, including Buddhist and secular texts from the Western Xia era and afterward. One attested compound containing it translates as “beautiful,” so its isolated gloss does not predict every phrase.

Text symbol

What 𗤋 means

It negates; the full sentence decides which English wording fits.

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “not,” “non,” “no,” or “do not.” The sentence shows what is being denied; 𗤋 alone does not tell you that.

Western Xia rulers commissioned the script in 1036 as part of building their state and establishing a Tangut written identity alongside Song China. It served Buddhist translations, and Tangut Buddhist writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227. A translated secular work survives in a Khara-Khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century.

Someone sent me 𗤋—what does it mean?

Treat it as a Tangut reference until context says more.

Sent alone, it could refer to the character, quote a text, or use the negative word; without a sentence, you cannot tell what is being denied. An 1185 poem uses it with 𗵽 in a phrase translated as “beautiful,” so the pair’s meaning cannot be guessed from the isolated word.

Is 𗤋 Chinese or Tangut?

No; 𗤋 is Tangut, a distinct script influenced by Chinese writing.

Its square, Chinese-influenced forms may look familiar to readers who know Chinese characters, but Tangut is not Chinese in another font. The Khitan state had its own script before 1036, a regional parallel to Tangut’s use of a distinct state writing system.

A historical Tangut word; a bare glyph needs context before you treat it as a complete reply.

A lone 𗤋 does not say what is being denied.
