What 𗤫 means
It means “house” or “room” in Tangut. The gloss comes from written word evidence, not from a guess based on the character’s shape.
A scholarly transcription writes its reconstructed reading as ²kyr’₄. The raised and lowered numbers are notation, useful for dictionary lookup but not a universal way to type or pronounce the character. A Tangut word list containing 𗤫 surfaced at a Beijing auction in 2014.
The first emperor of Western Xia, Li Yuanhao, ordered the Tangut script in 1036 to write the Tangut language, support state records, and build a written culture of its own. Chinese writing influenced its design, but Tangut became a separate script; its texts include Buddhist scriptures and Chinese works in translation. It remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming period. The earliest known transmitted Tangut document is an official military record dated 1072.
