Tangut Character 1796B

2412/6136

𗥫 is a Tangut character whose reading depends on its source: a note on a grain-loan contract reads it as a surname but suggests it may be a miswriting of 𗰜, translated there as “principle.” It also ends scholarly labels for two Tangut sound classes. If it arrives alone, ask what text or source it came from.

What 𗥫 means

𗥫 is a Tangut character whose reading depends on its source.

A grain-loan contract from Khara-Khoto, probably dated to 1215, uses 𗥫 in a personal name. Its editorial note reads the character as “surname,” then suggests it may be a miswriting of 𗰜, translated there as “principle,” because the forms resemble each other. That is a disputed reading of the manuscript, not a fixed gloss.

The Tangut script was created under the first emperor of Western Xia about 1036 to write the Tangut language. It was used for government and private records, religious works, translations, and other secular texts. In a scholarly Tangut sound table, 𗥫 ends labels for “light labials” and “gutturals”—sound classes involving the lips or throat.

Someone sent me 𗥫 — what is it?

It is a Tangut character; the message alone cannot settle its reading.

Ask what text or source the sender meant. The documented uses here come from a contract note and specialist sound-class labels, so a lone send does not show which one they intended.

Without Tangut context, do not guess between the surname reading, the proposed 𗰜 miswriting, and the sound-class labels.

Historical and specialist; its reading depends on the source.

Do not assume the contract’s “surname” gloss is settled; the note proposes a miswriting of 𗰜.
