Tangut character 𗥭

2414/6136

𗥭 is a Tangut character glossed in a historical dictionary as “to carry off.” Tangut was the language and writing system of the Xixia (Western Xia) state. Chinese writing influenced the script, but 𗥭 is not a Chinese character; if sent alone, treat it as a script sample or lookup target and ask for context.

What 𗥭 means

A Tangut dictionary glosses 𗥭 as “to carry off.”

Li Fanwen’s dictionary pairs Tangut entries with Chinese meanings; an index links this entry to number 3949 in Clauson’s Tangut dictionary. The Xixia (Western Xia) state used Tangut as its language and writing system.

Is 𗥭 Chinese?

No. It is Tangut, a separate writing system.

The Tangut script was created and standardized in the 11th century for the Western Xia state’s official records and cultural work, including translations. The earliest extant example cited in Tangut scholarship is an official document from 1072. Surviving collections include Buddhist translations and texts from after the state fell. Chinese writing influenced Tangut’s design; whether the Khitan people also influenced it remains debated. The scripts write different languages, so this character is not interchangeable with a Chinese character.

Historical and scholarly in context; a lone message gives little conversational context.

A Chinese-like form does not make it a Chinese character.

Why is 𗥭 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
