Tangut character 17986

2439/6136

𗦆 names China’s Jin dynasty in Tangut writing, as a Tangut dictionary gloss. In a modern message, read it as a historical reference to Tangut or that dynasty; the glyph alone does not reveal which. The writing system was created for Western Xia and continued in religious and other texts after the state fell.

What 𗦆 means

Tangut dictionaries gloss 𗦆 as the Chinese Jin dynasty of 266–420. The character gives the dynasty's name in Tangut writing; Chinese writes that name as 晉 in traditional form and 晋 in simplified form.

The Tangut script was created under Li Yuanhao, the first emperor of Western Xia, around 1036 CE, as part of state-building. An official message to a military inspector from 1072 is the earliest surviving Tangut document identified in the historical record. Tangut carried state records and translations of Buddhist and Chinese works.

Why does 𗦆 look Chinese?

It is a separate script with a Chinese-like design. Tangut uses the square, densely built look familiar from Chinese characters, but it writes the Tangut language. Knowing Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters does not let you read this glyph.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut remained in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, including in religious texts; it was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

What does 𗦆 mean in a message?

It points to Tangut history or the Jin dynasty, not a reaction.

One character cannot show which reference the sender intends. Use the surrounding words or ask them if there is no clue.

This is specialist historical writing: it fits discussion of Tangut, manuscripts, or Unicode.

Chinese-looking does not mean Chinese: 𗦆 is not interchangeable with 晉 or 晋.

2

How is 𗦆 pronounced?

Scholars reconstruct the Tangut reading in different ways: *tsjĩ¹, *¹tsin₄, *tsên¹, and *tsɪ̭ẹn¹. As of 2024, these technical transcriptions represent proposed historical sounds; they are not spellings to sound out as English words.

Why does 𗦆 show as a square?

The font on that screen probably lacks Tangut coverage. A Tangut-capable font can display the character; the square is a missing-glyph box, not another meaning.
