What 𗦗 means
It is a Tangut word for “to have.”
A Tangut–Chinese dictionary records this gloss. Scholars reconstruct its reading as so²; this is not a form of modern speech.
Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao commissioned the script in 1036 to support a Buddhist canon—a collection of sacred texts—and a distinct identity alongside China's Song dynasty. It drew on Chinese and Khitan writing models but remained a separate script.
Where was it used?
In Tangut state, religious, and scholarly texts.
Later material includes Buddhist and secular translations from Chinese and Tibetan. The Juyong Pass monument, commissioned in 1342–1345, still used Tangut in Buddhist inscriptions after the state fell. That later setting shows a change of use, not a new symbolic meaning for 𗦗.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗦗 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
