tangut ideograph-179ff

Tangut character 179FF

2560/6136

𗧿 is a Tangut character glossed as “to smear.” Tangut was the now-extinct language of the Western Xia state, whose court introduced a writing system in 1036 for official records and translations of Buddhist and Chinese classics. The script remained in use after Mongols conquered Western Xia in 1227; its square forms were modeled on Chinese regular script, but they write Tangut, not Chinese.

Why does 𗧿 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
