tangut ideograph-17a25

Tangut character 17A25

2598/6136

𗨥 belongs to the Tangut script, which was used to write the Tangut language. Its Unicode label names the character entry, not the word or pronunciation; a Tangut dictionary and the surrounding passage supply the reading. Tangut writing served the Western Xia state and appears in historical books and records.

What 𗨥 means

𗨥 is a Tangut character; its Unicode label is not a translation. “Tangut Ideograph-17A25” is an inventory label in Unicode, the standard that assigns identifiers to text characters. It does not give the Tangut word, its meaning, or its historical pronunciation. To read 𗨥 in a passage, consult a Tangut dictionary and the surrounding words.

How did Tangut change over time?

Tangut script began as state writing and later survived in books. The script was promoted for the Western Xia state in northwestern China around 1036–1037. A surviving official document sent to a military official in Guazhou is dated 1072. Tangut writing handled administration and official records while giving the state a distinct writing tradition alongside Chinese.

Surviving Tangut material includes Buddhist works, translations of Chinese books, and official documents; manuscripts and printed books both remain. Tangut characters use Chinese-like brush strokes and a Chinese-influenced structure, but the writing system is distinct. After Tangut stopped being used in daily life, bilingual texts and dictionaries helped readers reconstruct the language’s readings.

Why does 𗨥 show as a box?

Your font may lack Tangut characters. Unicode identifies the character, while a font draws its visible form; software without Tangut coverage may show a missing-glyph box. Fonts with Tangut coverage include Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan.

To enter it manually, use a Unicode-aware input method that accepts code points and enter U17A25. A box can come from missing font support even when the text character is intact.

1

Why does 𗨥 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
