2822/6136

𗬅 is one character in Tangut writing, the script created for the language of Western Xia (Xixia). Its Unicode name identifies the character, not the Tangut word it represented; reading it needs surrounding text and a Tangut dictionary. Tangut writing appears in Buddhist, government, and literary works.

What 𗬅 means

It is a Tangut character; its Unicode name does not translate it.

𗬅 belongs to Tangut writing, the script created for the Tangut language of the Western Xia state. The Unicode name identifies the encoded character, not the Tangut word it represented.

To read it in a historical passage, use the surrounding words and a Tangut dictionary. Alone, the character does not tell a reader unfamiliar with Tangut which word is meant.

How was Tangut writing used?

It served Western Xia government, Buddhist writing, and literature.

In 1036, Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao commissioned the script as part of state-building. It drew on Chinese writing while remaining a separate system, and helped distinguish the state from the neighboring Song dynasty; Tangut writing developed amid nearby Khitan script projects.

Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scriptures and Chinese translations, government records, Confucian and military works, encyclopedias, literature, and inscriptions. An official document dated 1072 is an early transmitted example. Writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; an inscription dated 1502 shows later use.

what does it mean when someone sends 𗬅?

A standalone 𗬅 does not reveal what the sender intends.

Ask for the Tangut passage or word if they expect you to read it; the character alone cannot supply that context.

Historical-script text; a lone character offers little to a reader unfamiliar with Tangut.

Do not infer a translation from the Unicode name.

Questions people ask

1

why does 𗬅 show as a box?

A font issue. A font without Tangut characters may show a box or fallback mark. A font that includes Tangut can draw the glyph; changing fonts changes its appearance, not the encoded character.
