Tangut character 17B0F

2832/6136

𗬏 is a character in the historical Tangut script. Its Unicode-style name identifies it but does not translate it. A 2018 study places it in a sound group reconstructed as ²len₄; that is a scholarly reading, not an English gloss. A font needs Tangut coverage to display it.

What 𗬏 means

It is a Tangut character; its name is an identifier, not a translation.

A 2018 study of a printed Tangut reference book lists 𗬏 in a homonym group: entries treated as having the same or similar reading. Its reconstructed reading, ²len₄, is a scholarly estimate tied to that source—not a guaranteed modern pronunciation or an English gloss.

Created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 CE, the script supported state-building and a distinct political identity. It carried official, private, and religious works, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, and a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist texts. It later became obsolete.

Is Tangut related to Chinese?

It borrowed design ideas, but remained a separate script.

Tangut borrowed Chinese visual and character-building principles, but did not descend from Chinese ideographs. Its neighboring Khitan state had developed scripts of its own earlier. These are historical connections and design influences, not evidence that 𗬏 is a Chinese character.

Why is 𗬏 hard to type or display?

A font draws it; an input method enters it.

Unicode identifies the character, but your active font supplies its shape. Without Tangut coverage, it may appear as a missing-glyph box. A Tangut-capable font such as Tangut Yinchuan addresses display; it does not add a keyboard layout.

One documented way to enter Tangut uses the RIME Tangut Cangjie input schema. Install that schema and a Tangut-capable font, then select the method. The input method handles entry; the font handles display.

Historical and specialist in tone; without Tangut context, 𗬏 reads as an unfamiliar writing character.
