What 𗬞 means
Its Unicode name identifies the code point, not the reading. A Tangut dictionary or the surrounding passage is needed to find its word and reading.
Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao promoted Tangut writing around 1036 CE as a state-building project; scholarship also identifies Buddhist scripture as a major reason for creating it.
The earliest known dated specimen may be from 1070/1071, decades after the script’s creation.
Why does 𗬞 look Chinese?
Tangut is a distinct script with Chinese-inspired forms.
Some scholars also propose influence from the earlier Khitan script; this is a debated link in the history of the writing system, not an identification of 𗬞 as Khitan.
Tangut appeared in Buddhist scripture, official and private writing, and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. Surviving texts show it in the Yuan and Ming dynasties before it became obsolete; bilingual glossaries and dictionaries later helped scholars read it again.
A reference character for Tangut research, dictionary work, and font testing.
Do not infer its reading from its Chinese-inspired shape.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗬞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
