Tangut character 𗭧

2920/6136

The Tangut character 𗭧 has dictionary glosses “to smash” and “grain.” It appears in a Buddhist text translated into Tangut and in a Tangut rhyme dictionary; a square on screen usually means the font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𗭧 means

Its recorded dictionary glosses are “to smash” and “grain.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary gives both glosses. A character index in chapter 3 of a Buddhist text translated into Tangut also lists it.

The Sea of Writing, an old Tangut dictionary that groups entries by matching end sounds, lists it as 76.221. Tangut script was created to write the Tangut language under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036. It served official and cultural work, then stayed in official, private, and religious writing after the empire fell. Its structure reflects Chinese influence, but Tangut is a distinct script.

Why does 𗭧 show as a square?

A missing Tangut font can leave an empty square.

As of 2026, a webpage can load a Tangut web font while another app on the same device lacks installed coverage. Adding a Tangut font to that app may fix the display; the font changes the drawing, not the character.

Historical and specialist: in a modern message, 𗭧 reads as Tangut writing and suggests a deliberate scholarly or design choice.

Don’t infer a Mandarin reading from its Chinese-influenced structure.

1

Why does 𗭧 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
