What 𗭹 means

In Tangut, 𗭹 means “drum.”

A linguistic study pairs the Tangut word with words for “drum” in two related languages, Khroskyabs and Japhug.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served Western Xia government and Buddhist learning.

Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered a separate script as part of state-building and to mark an identity distinct from the Song dynasty in China. One goal was a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon, a collection of sacred Buddhist texts. Tangut’s visual style and character-building principles drew on Chinese writing, but Tangut was not directly derived from Chinese. The neighboring Khitan people had created two scripts about a century earlier, one based largely on Chinese writing. Surviving Tangut works include Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Chinese classics, and other literature.

Why does 𗭹 show as a box?

The font may not include Tangut characters.

If it appears as an empty square, the app’s font may lack Tangut glyphs; use a font that supports the script.

1

Why does 𗭹 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗭹 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
