Tangut Character 17B94

2965/6136

To enter 𗮔, use a Tangut input method that searches by component or code and lets you select a candidate. It is a Tangut-script character, so its reading depends on the surrounding text or a dictionary. A Buddhist title from the Western Xia period includes it in a phrase translated “Shining Speech”; that title does not establish a standalone gloss.

What 𗮔 means

Use a Tangut input method with candidate selection.

The method can locate 𗮔 by component or code. If the character appears as an empty square, the text may still contain it; the device or fallback font lacks Tangut coverage. Supported fonts can also draw it in different styles.

What does 𗮔 mean in a Tangut text?

𗮔 is a character in the Tangut script, created by imperial decree around 1036 to write the Tangut language. The script served official and cultural writing in the Western Xia state. It was modeled on Chinese writing, but Tangut and Chinese are separate scripts; Chinese readings do not transfer. Its strokes are not pictures whose meaning can simply be read off.

A Tangut text from the Western Xia period includes 𗮔 in the title of a Buddhist collection by three generations of teachers in the White Cloud Sect. It was printed with movable type, reusable pieces arranged to form text. The title is translated “Collected Writings of the Shining Speech of Three Generations.” This attests the character in that title; it does not establish “shining” as a standalone gloss. The script’s documented use continued until 1502.

Historical and specialist; a lone modern appearance needs a source or surrounding Tangut text.

Drift: After the Mongol conquest in the 13th century, Tangut left daily use; later scholars reconstructed how to read it from dictionaries and bilingual materials rather than ordinary conversation.

Can I read 𗮔 as Chinese?

No. Tangut was modeled on Chinese writing, but it is a separate script; its characters need Tangut context, not a Chinese reading.
