tangut ideograph-17b95

Tangut character for night

𗮕 means “night” in Tangut. The Tangut (Xixia) script was created by decree in 1036 to write its language, express the Western Xia state's distinct identity, and probably help translate Buddhist scriptures. Its design reflected Chinese writing and an earlier script tradition used by the neighboring Khitan people. A 1072 official letter is the earliest surviving Tangut document; secular works used the script, whose latest known inscription dates to 1502.
