tangut ideograph-17bad

Tangut Ideograph 17BAD

2990/6136

𗮭 is a Tangut character in Xixia’s writing tradition; “17BAD” identifies it but does not reveal its word meaning. Tangut writing served Xixia’s government and Buddhist scripture. Chinese and Khitan script traditions explain its historical setting, not this character’s exact reading.

What 𗮭 means

17BAD identifies the character, not its Tangut word. A Tangut dictionary or translated passage is needed to find the word-level reading of 𗮭.

The Tangut script was created under Emperor Li Yuanhao in 1036 as Xixia built its state. It served official work and a major Buddhist scripture project, helping distinguish the kingdom from Song China. Surviving texts include Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan as well as secular writing. A Khara-Khoto manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. After the Mongol conquest, Tangut fell out of daily use, while surviving manuscripts kept the script available for study.

Tangut characters drew on the visual structure of Chinese writing without being derived from it. Earlier neighboring Khitan states had also created scripts of their own. These are links between writing traditions, not evidence that 𗮭 has a Chinese or Khitan reading.

Why does 𗮭 show as a box?

The available font may not cover Tangut. Browser fallback tries the specified web font and then fonts available on the device; without Tangut coverage, it may show a replacement box or another missing-glyph mark. A web font loaded in one browser does not add Tangut coverage to other apps.

How do I type 𗮭?

Use a Tangut input method. Xunpin can search by reconstructed Tangut pronunciation, by strokes, or by a Four-Corner code (a code based on the character’s shape). The method needs an entry for this exact character; ordinary Chinese pinyin, a spelling system for Mandarin pronunciation, does not select Tangut text.

A historical-script character whose word reading depends on its Tangut text.

“17BAD” identifies the glyph; it does not translate it.

Drift: In 2019, Unicode review work documented Tangut glyph corrections involving joined and unjoined strokes. Small shape differences can reflect a font revision rather than a different character.

Why does 𗮭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
