Tangut character 𗰓

3092/6136

In Tangut, 𗰓 means “how?”—a question about the way an action happens. In the historical poem Ode on Monthly Pleasures, it asks how the monthly celebrations arose. Sent alone, it gives little clue to a reader who cannot read Tangut.

What 𗰓 means

It turns an action into a question about how it happens.

In the Tangut poem Ode on Monthly Pleasures, 𗰓 follows the word translated “origin” and comes before “to arise,” forming the question “How did the monthly celebrations arise?” Its place in the line makes it a question word, not a label for the celebrations.

Where does 𗰓 belong?

It belongs to the Tangut script, made for the Tangut language.

The Tangut script was devised in 1036 under imperial order. Also called the Xixia script, it served government documents, monumental inscriptions and Buddhist translations. After the Western Xia state fell, Tangut writing continued into the early Ming, especially in Buddhist works.

Tangut writing followed Chinese writing in its overall form and use of components, but it recorded a different language and could not be read as Chinese. The Sea of Characters, a Tangut reference book, explains compounds through their components.

Was 𗰓 part of a ritual language?

The meaning is clear; the ritual-language label is debated.

One interpretation treats parallel lines in the poem as two registers: ordinary vocabulary and a special ritual language. Another reads the unusual line as an interlinear gloss—an explanatory, word-by-word aid to the main text.

That second reading accounts for why the main line is grammatical while its parallel is awkward. The debate changes how scholars describe the passage, not the meaning of 𗰓 in the main line.

Historical and scholarly; in Tangut text, it functions as a question word.

A standalone 𗰓 is not self-explanatory unless the reader knows Tangut.
