tangut ideograph-17c53

Tangut character 17C53

3156/6136

𗱓 is a character in the Tangut script, also called Xixia script; its Unicode label identifies it but does not translate it. Tangut reference works such as Sea of Writing and Homophones record it, but its reading must be established from Tangut-language context. Tangut writing served the Western Xia court and Buddhist canon, drawing on Chinese writing traditions and earlier Khitan script-making.

What 𗱓 means

Its Unicode label is not a word translation. Sea of Writing and Homophones record 𗱓, but those references do not give a simple English gloss. Its reading must be identified from Tangut-language context; the shape alone cannot supply it.

Why was Tangut writing made?

It was developed for the Western Xia court and Tangut language. It also served the Buddhist canon and helped distinguish the state from Song China. Its design drew on Chinese writing principles and followed earlier Khitan script-making.

Later Tangut books carried Buddhist translations, literature derived from Chinese works, law, and administration. Though 𗱓 may look Chinese, it belongs to Tangut; resemblance alone does not establish a Chinese reading.

A historical character from Tangut writing; its reading belongs in linguistic and textual context.

A Chinese-looking shape does not make it Chinese or reveal its reading.

Why does 𗱓 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
