Tangut Character 17C98

3225/6136

𗲘 is a Tangut character recorded with the historical dictionary sense “month.” The Tangut script was devised for the Western Xia state and used for government writing and translations of Buddhist texts and Chinese classics. Its old gloss does not guarantee that a recipient will understand it as a message; font support and specialized input are the practical hurdles.

What 𗲘 means

A Tangut dictionary groups this entry under “month.”

An English index to Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists entry 0863 under “month,” and a Unicode code chart maps 𗲘 to that entry. This records a Tangut vocabulary meaning; it does not guarantee a recipient will understand the character alone in a modern message.

Why does this Tangut character resemble Chinese writing?

Tangut writing drew on Chinese forms but served another language.

Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered a script for the Tangut language, which Yeli Renrong and other scholars devised. Its forms drew on Chinese characters, but the project aimed to set Western Xia’s written culture apart from Chinese.

In 1036, Tangut became the government-designated language. The script was used for official writing and translations of Buddhist texts and Chinese classics. Tangut inscriptions remained readable more than a century after Western Xia fell, before the language faded from ordinary use.

A standalone message may be opaque even when the character renders correctly.

Why does 𗲘 show as a box?

It can. As of 2026, fonts or apps without Tangut coverage may show a box, and Tangut fonts may draw the same character differently.

Is 𗲘 a Chinese character?

No. It is Tangut, a separate historical script for the Tangut language. Its square forms drew on Chinese characters, but the scripts are not interchangeable.

Can I send 𗲘 to mean month?

Not reliably. “Month” is its historical dictionary gloss, but a recipient may not know the Tangut character; add a translation if the meaning needs to be clear.
