What 𗲤 means

𗲤 is a Tangut character; its label is not a translation. The Unicode name identifies the graph, not the Tangut word it represented. Do not infer a translation from its strokes or hexadecimal label.

From 1038–1227, the Tangut state of Western Xia used Tangut script for official records and cultural work. The script spread in 1036. Modern scholarship identifies an official document sent to a military official in Guazhou in 1072 as the earliest surviving example. Those dates describe the script and its written record, not the first appearance of this individual character.

Tangut writing served government, law, Buddhist translations, and printed books. It continued into the Ming period after Western Xia fell, then left everyday use. The script is studied and represented in dictionaries, digital catalogues, and fonts.

Why does 𗲤 show as a box?

The active font may not include a Tangut glyph. Apps rely on fonts to draw 𗲤. Without Tangut coverage, a blank square may appear; fonts that support the character can still draw different outlines. The text remains the same character.

Which scripts are connected to Tangut?

Tangut shares structural principles with Chinese; a Khitan link is debated. Tangut sources also acknowledge a relationship between their script's roots and Chinese writing. That connection does not make 𗲤 a Chinese character or give it a Chinese reading.

Some scholars propose that the earlier Khitan script, another medieval state script in Inner Asia, influenced Tangut. This remains debated and does not establish direct descent.

Historical and specialist: this belongs in Tangut text, historical material, or discussion of the script.

Do not guess its Tangut word from the strokes or hexadecimal label.
