What 𗲴 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss 𗲴 as “dog.”
The Tangut–Chinese dictionary entry pairs it with the Chinese character 犬 (“dog”) and reconstructs its Tangut reading as thja. Thja is scholarly Latin-letter notation for the extinct language, not a current spoken pronunciation.
The Tangut script was created in the 11th century for official and cultural life in Western Xia (Xixia), a Tangut-led state. Its character structures draw on Chinese writing but represent Tangut, not Chinese; the earliest known Tangut document is dated 1072. Buddhist texts kept the script in use after the state ended.
Historical and linguistic; the “dog” gloss comes from a Tangut–Chinese dictionary.
