What 𗲲 means
It is a Tangut word glossed as “brightness.”
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave the state an official writing system of its own.
In 1036, the Western Xia court ordered Tangut script’s creation as part of state-building. A major aim was a Tangut-language collection of Buddhist scriptures. The script borrowed Chinese principles of character construction while marking Western Xia’s distinct political and cultural identity.
Surviving books include translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Confucian and military classics, encyclopedic works, and literature. A manuscript associated with the Khara-khoto ruins probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Excavations there in 1908–1909 recovered major collections that helped scholars decipher Tangut.
Historical and specialized: use it in Tangut text, scholarship, or deliberate script display.
