tangut ideograph-17cfd

Tangut Ideograph 17CFD

3326/6136

𗳽 is a Tangut (Xixia) character; scholars reconstruct its reading as ²lon₁, an approximate pronunciation rather than a translation. Tangut is a historical writing system for a different language from Chinese, despite its Chinese-like square forms. If the glyph appears as a blank box, the app or font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𗳽 means

It is a Tangut character; its reading is not its meaning.

The reconstructed Tangut reading for 𗳽 is approximately ²lon₁: a scholarly transcription of its sound, not a gloss.

Unicode's label TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-17CFD is generated from the code point; it is not a Tangut word. To translate a passage, look up the word in a Tangut dictionary and use its sentence context.

Why was the Tangut script created?

To give Western Xia a script for public and cultural life.

Tangut was developed under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036. Western Xia was a Tangut-led state in what is now northwestern China. Tangut characters have a Chinese-like square structure, but they write a different language; resemblance alone does not make them Chinese characters.

Tangut appears in government records, private writing, and religious works: books, sutras (Buddhist scriptures), carved inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut continued in religious works during the Yuan and Ming periods, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Why does 𗳽 show as a blank box?

The app or device may lack a Tangut-capable font.

Unicode text can remain intact while an app cannot draw the character. A Tangut font is needed, and fonts can draw the script in different styles, such as Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta. As of 2026, some mobile apps still fail to render Tangut text.

For repeated entry, a Tangut input method (IME) can show candidate characters and let you confirm one with a key or click; a Unicode character map is another route.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Tangut study, historical-text work, dictionaries, and font testing.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗳽 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
