Tangut character 𗳿

In Tangut, 𗳿 means “risky mountainside,” a noun for dangerous mountain terrain. It is a historical written character; a box on screen may mean the selected font lacks Tangut coverage.

Text symbol

What 𗳿 means

It names hazardous mountain land. Scholars reconstruct its reading as *ka², roughly “ka”; the asterisk marks a form inferred from evidence, not a surviving recording.

The Western Xia state commissioned the Tangut script in 1036 for state-building, a distinct identity, and a Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist sacred texts. Manuscripts from the 12th or early 13th century include Buddhist texts, Chinese classics, military works, and literature. Chinese writing influenced the Tangut script, but knowing Chinese characters does not let a reader decipher it.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗳿 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
