What 𗴆 means
Its value is lexical: Tangut text around it supplies the reading. Unicode's algorithmic label identifies the code point, not the character's meaning. Li Fanwen's Tangut–Chinese dictionary indexes entry L2008-1556 with Chinese 陳 and a reconstructed reading. The index is a cross-language reference, not permission to substitute 陳 for 𗴆.
Why was the Xixia script made?
It served a state-building and religious-literary project. Emperor Li Yuanhao commissioned the Tangut script in 1036 for the Tangut-led Western Xia state. Its creation supported Buddhist translation and a distinct political-cultural identity in relation to Song China. Its forms drew inspiration from Chinese writing, but it was a separate script.
A Khara-khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves Tangut translations of Chinese court anecdotes. Other surviving texts include Confucian works, encyclopedias, military treatises, literature, and Tibetan material.
Why might 𗴆 show as a box?
Fonts can draw the same encoded character differently. Unicode Standard 18.0 treats chart glyphs as reference forms, not fixed designs, so Tangut fonts can vary. Without Tangut font coverage, an app may show a box or replacement mark.

1Why does 𗴆 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
