What 𗴝 means
It names a type of jade object. Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “a kind of jadeware.”
The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor to serve the state and Buddhist scriptures. It carried Chinese and Tibetan translations; examples include 12th-century manuscripts and the 1502 Baoding pillars with Buddhist prayer inscriptions.
Is 𗴝 Chinese or Tangut?
𗴝 is Tangut, not Chinese. The script drew on Chinese characters and the writing tradition of the neighboring Khitan people.
As of 2026, a browser or app without a Tangut font may show an empty square.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗴝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
