What 𗵏 means
The gloss “brothers” is recorded for a two-character compound.
The sequence 𗵏𘕳 appears in the Tangut dictionaries Homophones and Sea of Characters with the collective gloss “brothers.” A 2024 study notes that the compound has no textual attestations and does not show that either character was used on its own.
So the dictionary gloss cannot be assigned to 𗵏 alone; without more Tangut context, its meaning remains unidentified.
Why was Tangut script made?
Western Xia created it for government and cultural life.
Tangut writing was created in 1036 on Emperor Li Yuanhao’s orders. Its early purposes included a Tangut Buddhist canon and a distinct state identity alongside Song China.
Surviving Tangut texts also cover translations, Confucian learning, military affairs, and literature. A British Library manuscript from Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.
Why might 𗵏 be missing on my screen?
Your font may lack Tangut coverage.
A text character needs a supporting font to display. As of 2026, Tangut-focused projects list fonts such as Noto Serif Tangut and BabelStone Tangut Wenhai, as well as online dictionaries and input tools.
A historical Tangut character with dictionary evidence tied to a compound.
Do not send 𗵏 expecting a reader to understand “brother”; the dictionary gloss belongs to a two-character sequence.
