Tangut character 𗵎

3407/6136

𗵎 is a character from the historical Tangut script. A 2008 Tangut-Chinese dictionary gives its scholarly reconstructed reading as śjɨj¹, which is a pronunciation, not a translation. A different character, 𗵆, shares that reading and is glossed “to accomplish,” but that gloss does not transfer to 𗵎.

What 𗵎 means

It is a Tangut character; its exact English gloss is unknown. Tangut writing recorded the now-extinct Tangut language, which was used in the Western Xia state. The Unicode label identifies the encoded character; it does not translate it.

A 2008 Tangut-Chinese dictionary gives 𗵎 the scholarly reconstructed reading śjɨj¹. That notation represents a proposed pronunciation, not a translation. A different glyph, 𗵆, is assigned the same reconstructed reading and glossed “to accomplish”; a shared reading alone does not establish a shared meaning.

Tangut writing had a public life before Unicode

Accounts place the creation of Tangut writing around 1036–1037, as the Western Xia state took shape. The state used it for official records, and Buddhist works were translated into Tangut. An academic survey cites an official dispatch dated 1072 as the earliest transmitted Tangut document.

Tangut texts continued in manuscripts, inscriptions, and printed works after the state fell. The last known inscription is dated 1502. Scholars discuss Tangut alongside the Chinese-character-style scripts Khitan and Jurchen; these were distinct writing systems. Today, digital editions and Tangut-capable fonts make characters such as 𗵎 usable in research.

How do I type 𗵎?

Enter 17D4E in a hexadecimal Unicode input method. That selects this exact encoded character even if you do not know its Tangut word meaning.

If a blank box appears in place of 𗵎, the active font lacks Tangut coverage. Use a font that supports Tangut characters; this is a font issue.

Treat it as a historical Tangut character used in reading or research, not as a casual reaction.

A reconstructed sound does not supply an English translation.

1

Can 𗵎 mean “to accomplish”?

No. That gloss belongs to the different character 𗵆, which has the same reconstructed reading. A shared reading does not make the characters share a meaning.
