What 𗶊 means
Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary glosses it as “anger.”
Its reconstructed reading is njij, written in scholarly Latin letters. The Chinese character 怒 (“anger”) is the gloss, not another spelling of 𗶊.
The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao for government and Buddhist scripture translation. It drew on Chinese writing principles and Khitan and Jurchen state scripts, while marking Western Xia’s independence from Song China. Khara-Khoto manuscripts from the 12th century show Tangut in Buddhist texts and translations of nonreligious works.
