Tangut character 17D9C

3485/6136

𗶜 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode label does not translate the word it writes. A Tangut dictionary records a scholarly reconstructed reading; the exact word sense depends on its entry and context. The Tangut script—also called Xixia writing—was made for the Western Xia kingdom. As of 2026, this character mainly appears in scholarship, lookup, and font testing.

What 𗶜 means

The technical label names the character, not its word meaning.

Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut dictionary indexes 𗶜 as entry 0905 and gives the reconstructed reading dźjɨ̣. That scholarly transcription records a reconstructed reading, not a translation; the exact word sense depends on the dictionary entry and its context.

Why does 𗶜 look Chinese?

Tangut is a separate script with Chinese-influenced forms.

Western Xia's first emperor ordered the Tangut script about 1036 to write Tangut and support the kingdom's cultural identity. Tangut characters have a Chinese-influenced visual design, but the script represents the Tangut language and is distinct from Chinese writing.

Nearby states ruled by Khitan and Jurchen peoples also developed Chinese-influenced scripts; that is a script-level parallel, not evidence that 𗶜 descends from either. Tangut served official, private, and religious writing, including books, sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. It remained in use through the Yuan and Ming periods, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

What does 𗶜 mean when someone sends it?

Read it as a historical-text sample, not as an emoji.

In digital use, it mainly appears as a historical text sample, a lookup target, or a font test. A blank box usually means the selected font lacks Tangut coverage. Tangut source traditions also preserve variant glyph shapes; Unicode may unify variants it treats as non-contrastive, so fonts can draw the same encoded character differently.

Specialist and archival: without surrounding text, it reads like a Tangut sample or a font test.

Its Chinese-like design can mislead: the script is Tangut, not Chinese.

Questions people ask

1

Can the same Tangut character look different in two fonts?

Yes. Tangut source traditions preserve variant shapes, and Unicode can unify variants judged non-contrastive; fonts may therefore draw the same encoded character differently.
