Tangut Character 𗶻

3516/6136

𗶻 is a Tangut character, not a Chinese one; its Unicode name identifies the code, not the word. Its L4482 dictionary trail and surrounding text help locate a gloss. Displaying or typing it may require Tangut-specific font and input-method support.

What 𗶻 means

It is a Tangut character, not a Chinese one.

𗶻 belongs to Tangut, the separate script used to write the now-extinct Tangut language. Its square forms follow a tradition associated with Chinese writing, and scholars compare Tangut with Khitan, another historical script; neither resemblance nor comparison makes this graph Chinese or Khitan. A specialist Tangut index by Li Fanwen lists it as L4482 and links it to entries #1252 and #902B; these are lookup identifiers, not translations. Its catalog relationship to the Tangut radical 𘣘 helps locate the entry.

Western Xia created and promoted Tangut writing for state identity and official use during the 11th century. The earliest transmitted example identified in the research is an official military document dated 1072. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and early Ming periods in official, private, religious, and inscribed texts. This history explains where Tangut was used; it does not establish the word value of 𗶻.

How do I type 𗶻?

Use a Tangut input method, if one is available.

Tangut input methods are separate from Chinese pinyin. Depending on the tool, you may enter stroke codes, radicals (recurring character components), Cangjie components from a Chinese input method, catalog numbers, or reconstructed Tangut readings. A reading-based method depends on the reconstruction it uses.

Why does 𗶻 show as a box?

A missing Tangut font is the usual cause.

Browsers and applications need a font that contains Tangut glyphs; without one, they can show an empty box or another fallback mark. As of 2026, a browser web font may display the character while a separate application still lacks Tangut support. Check the underlying Unicode identifier (the code point) before concluding that the character itself changed.

Specialist and historical: use it in Tangut text or a font-supported demonstration; it is not a Chinese character.

A box signals missing font support, not 𗶻’s meaning.

Why does 𗶻 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
